Tarifa is known for its beaches and owing to its location the windy conditions are perfect for Tarifa windsurfing, Tarifa kitesurfing, Tarifa surfing as well as sunbathing. Most of Tarifa’s beaches are located on the Atlantic side of the resort. Tarifa is located on the Costa de La Luz and the nearest airport is Gibraltar.
The only Tarifa beach located on the Mediterranean Sea is the Playa Chica Tarifa. The Playa Chica is perfect for family fun and is great for swimming and snorkelling. The Playa Chica has a kiosk, toilets, showers and parking in the street close by.
Playa Los Lances Tarifa is the city beach of Tarifa. This beach is long and wide and is perfect for kitesurfing. The Playa Los Lances has a promenade known as the Paseo Maritimo where visitors will find toilets and showers. Beach Bars at the Los Lances Beach include Soul Beach, Bien Star and the Serengueti. Cafes, bars and restaurants along the Paseo Maritimo include the Bere Bar, Ahti Lounge, Malibu, Lupita, Surla and Gunlao.
The beach Playa Rio Jara is located outside of Tarifa where the Jara River enters the sea. This beach is relatively quiet and never over crowded, perfect for kite surfing. The Playa Rio Jara Tarifa is a reserve with some rare bird species. Facilities at the Playa Rio Jara include showers. The perfect time for surfing is between May and October.
Playa Dos Mares is located five kilometres away from the Tarifa city centre and is perfect for surfing, kite surfing, and wind surfing. The Playa Dos Mares has been split into two areas where one zone is used for teaching wind surfing kite surfing and surfing. The sand dunes provide natural protection for sun bathing. The Waves Bar is a Tarifa institution and here are the only toilets at the beach. The Playa Dos Mares Tarifa also provides ample parking.
The Playa Arte Vida Tarifa is a great beach for surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing. The chill out garden at the Hotel Arte Vida Tarifa provides some good entertainment as well as drinks with a live DJ from midday. At the Playa Arte Vida Tarifa people can take lessons in kitesurfing, surfing and windsurfing and also rent windsurfers, kitesurfers and surf boards. Toilets can be found at the hotel at the beach bar.
The Playa Hurricane Tarifa is one of the best beaches for windsurfing and surfing in Tarifa. The Playa Hurricane Tarifa is unsuitable for kitesurfing as the beach is only 15 metres wide. The beach is located below the popular Hurricane Beach Hotel where one can rent windsurfers and surf boards from the Club Mistral at the Hotel Hurricane. The Hurricane Beach is protected and perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Nearby the Playa Hurricane are camping grounds of Torre de la Pena where one can use the toilets and showers. At the Torre de la Pena camping grounds there is a beach bar open to all the public.
The epicentre of kitesurfing and windsurfing is at the beach at the Playa de los Valdevaqueros. The Playa de los Valdequeros is located eight kilometres from Tarifa and starts at the Hurricane Hotel At the Playa de los Valdevaqueros one can find two surf centres one for kitesurfing and one for windsurfing which are the Spin Out and Tarifa Smile. Furthermore bathers at the Playa de los Valdevaqueros beach can hire gear from the Club Mistral as well. Facilities include beach bars of which the Tangana is the place to see and be seen at. At the beach there are toilets and showers as well as ample parking.
At the end of Tarifa Bay is the Playa Punta Paloma Tarifa. The Playa Punta Paloma Tarifa is located ten kilometres from the resort centre. This beach has some fine golden sand and natural sand dunes perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Facilities include the El Mirlo Beach Bar and parking. Please note there are no showers or toilets at the Playa Punta Paloma. Surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing are possible but Tarifa has more suitable beaches to pursue these activities.
