Costa de Almeria

The Costa Almeria starts south of Aguilas on the Costa Calida and stretches as far as the port and city of Almeria. The west of Almeria begins the Costa Tropical. The Costa Almeria and its sea side resorts are serviced by Almeria Airport and in some extreme cases Murcia Airport on the Costa Calida. The Costa de Almeria is located in the province of Almeria and the communidad of Andalucia. The Costa Almeria has a little more than two hundred kilometres of coastline much of which remains undeveloped.

The Costa Almeria weather is some of the warmest in Europe and enjoys more than three hundred and twenty days of sunshine a year. The most important city and town on the Costa Almeria is Almeria with its airport which is located eight kilometres to the east of the city. Almeria is also a busy port offering regular ferry services to a few ports and harbours in Morocco and Algeria in North Africa which is located less than one hundred kilometres across the Mediterranean Sea.

Almeria port offers regular services to Ghazaouet in Algeria. Almeria Ghazaouet ferry crossings are on offer with four sailings a week and take nine hours. Melilla which is a Spanish enclave in Morocco and the Almeria Mellila ferry crossings offer ten sailings a week and the journey time is just under four hours. The Almeria Oran ferry crossings have one sailing a week and the journey time is nine hours. Oran is located in Algeria. The Almeria Nador ferry crossings are on offer daily seven days a week and the journey time is roughly nine hours. Nador is situated in Morocco. Ferry services can be booked with the ferry operators of Trasmediterranea and Acciona Trasmediterranea.

San Jose is located less than thirty minutes away by car to the east of Almeria. San Jose is located in the heart of the Natural Park of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar. Once a small fishing village, San Jose has developed into a tourist resort with a superior tourist infrastructure, beaches and a pretty marina.

Carboneras is located at the mouth of the Albas River to the south of the Cabrera Sierra and at the start of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Carboneras is one of the most picturesque sea side resorts on the Costa Almeria Map. Carboeras is known for its beaches and has just over seventeen kilometres of beaches.

Mojacar is located on a hillside overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and has a Moorish heritage which is still in evidence today as can be seen in the architecture with its white washed houses. Mojacar is known for its beaches and its nightlife and is a magnet for British holidaymakers, artists and writers.

Garrucha is located between the sea side resorts of Mojacar in the south and Vera Playa in the north. Garrucha dates back to the 16th century and was once a fishing village. The Paseo Maritimo runs for two kilometres all the way through Garrucha and is the focal point of tourists visiting Garrucha.

Vera is located inland and overlooks the beaches of Vera Playa, Puerto del Rey, Pueblo Salinas, Palameros Bajo and Villaricos. Vera is considered an upmarket resort with many fine restaurants. Vera Playa is one of the best nudist beaches in Spain and has a community based all around the nudist way of life.

The Costa Almeria has many smaller undiscovered sea side resorts which include San Juan de los Terreros, Pozo del Esparto, Cala Panizo, Cala el Calon, La Mesa Roldan, Agua Amarga, Las Negras, La Isleta, Cabo de Gata, La Fabriquilla and La Almadraba.

The Costa Almeria has a few theme parks and water parks. The water parks are represented by the Parque Aquatico Vera which can be found in the resorts of Garrucha, Villaricos, Mojacar Playa, Turre and Vera. The Parque Aquatico Vera is open for the tourist season during the months of June, July, August and September. Oasys Mini Hollywood is located in Tabernas north of the city of Almeria. Texas Hollywood is also located in Tabernas and make for good days out experiencing rides, shows, restaurants and bars. Many westerns were filmed at Texas Hollywood.

The Costa Almeria is growing in popularity in the tourist numbers as many holiday makers seek more value for money in less crowded resorts compared to the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol.
