Weather Costa Calida
The Costa Calida is a stretch of coastline in Spain that stretches from the south of Pilar de la Horada to Aguilas in the south. The Costa Calida is located between the Southern Costa Blanca and Costa Almeria. The main airport servicing visitors to the Costa Calida is Murcia, although many tourists arrive on the Costa Blanca using Alicante as the gateway as it is the hub in the region and then make their way to the resorts of the Costa Calida. The largest coastal centres on the Costa Calida include the ports of Mazarrron and Cartagena while Aguilas and the Mar Menor are very popular with tourists.
The Costa Calida is known for its Murcia beaches and Murcia Golf courses and for the sea side resorts on the Mar Menor and the La Manga strip. The city of Murcia is the largest on the Costa Calida and makes for an exciting day out shopping at the shopping at the Thader Shopping Centre or spending a day at Terr Natura with its water park. The Costa Calida is also famous for its salt lakes and salt exports which also affect humidity levels in the area.
The Costa Calida has some of the hottest weather on the Costas hence the name. Summer temperatures during the month of August in the city of Murcia often reach forty degrees Centigrade during the day and don’t cool down much at night either. Cooling sea breezes keep temperatures bearable and owing to the landscape, salt lakes and lack of vegetation humidity levels on the Costa Calida are fairly low.
The Costa Calida is also sheltered by the hills and mountains allowing for a micro climate which allows for very mild winters with some of the lowest rainfall in Spain. The Costa Calida benefits from over three hundred and twenty days of sunshine so that even in the winter months one can expect more sunshine than rain with the exception of the Gota Fria which signals the end of the summer and is often accompanied by stron winds, torrential rain and flooding. Although it is too cold to swim in the sea in winter one can still enjoy the outdoors with a game of golf or sit outside allowing for al fresco dining.
The autumn weather is often as hot as the summer weather but owing to the majority of the tourists having returned home in time to start the school term, the Costa Calida is often a good time to visit in September, October and November. Spring arrives as early as February on the Costa Calida and the weather can best be described as variable , one day very hot and the next again a little cooler.
Visitors coming to the Costa Calida can pack jackets and jumpers as well as t shirts and shorts if they are visiting the sea side resorts from October to May and pack a good sun screen and sun glasses as well. Costa Calida weather has been recognised by the United Nations Organisation of WHO as having some of the healthiest climates in the world.
