Things to do in Alicante

Alicante has a number of fine beaches that you can reach on foot, by car or by tram. Alicante is the hub of most flights entering the Costa Blanca and services the resorts to the north and the south as well as the Costa Calida and Costa Azahar. Alicante isn’t an obvious tourist resort but does have a lot on offer such as the Santa Barbara Castle, beautiful historical buildings, good shopping and the fabulous Explanada de España which is the promenade lining the sea front. The busy harbour terminal has ferries leaving for Oran and Algiers in Algeria several times a week. You can also catch the ferry to Tabarca Island which is the only inhabited island which belongs to the Costa Blanca.

Alicante has a fair number of beaches. The Playa de Postguet is nine hundred metres in length and is located at the foot of the Monte Benacantil. The beach has a promenade with bars and restaurants and has been awarded blue flag status. This beach is always busy but even more so in the summer months.

The Playa de Coco is a smaller beach and this beach is also used for Alicante’s fishermen who bring in their catch of the day.

The Playa de Almadraba is very busy with tourists in the summer months and offers a great range of water sports.

The Playa de la Albufereta is located to the north of the city and historically was home to the harbour that served Lucentum which was a Roman village which became the foundation of modern day Alicante.

Cabo de Las Huertas makes up three little coves which are only accessible on foot. Here are two nude beaches the Cala Palmera and the Cala Cantelalares.

The Playa de San Juan has a seven kilometre stretch of golden sands, with bars and restaurants nearest to the Alicante end of the beach. You can easily catch the tram from Alicante to San Juan if you don’t want to drive. The next resort along is El Campello which has all the facilities on its two beaches.

The El Saladar Urbanova Beach lies to the south of Alicante and is closest to El Altet the airport. This beach is a bit of a hidden gem and unknown to tourists therefore is quieter in the summer.

Most beaches around Alicante have been awarded blue flag status. Facilities will include showers, foot showers, a life guard in the summer months, sun loungers and parasols for hire and a play area for children. Usually there is promenade with bars, restaurants, pubs, shops and ice cream parlours.

Alicante weather with its hot summers and no rain can have temperatures of more than thirty degrees in the summer. June, September and October are still perfect for bathing, making Alicante the place to be!
