Alicante Airport is the hub on the Costa Blanca and serves tourists and residents living on the Northern Costa Blanca, Southern Costa Blanca, Costa Azahar, Costa Calida and in some exceptional circumstances Almeria as well. Each carrier has their own set of luggage allowances and passengers will find that their hold and cabin luggage are weighed before departure and all excesses will be charged at the going rate. Ryan Air is the strictest with their 15kg hold allowance and be careful not to shop too much duty free , because randomly passengers will be pulled aside just before embarking their plane to have their cabin luggage weighed again and any excess you will have to pay for.

Alicante has what is known as a Mediterranean climate meaning that there is no rain in summer but guaranteed sunshine instead. Temperatures seldom fall below thirty degrees centigrade even at night. In winter there is some rain but temperatures can still easily reach twenty degrees centigrade. The spring can be warm with some often unanticipated cooler weather so it is always best to pack a jumper and a jacket while the autumn is often as hot as the summer but without the humidity.
Of all the airports on the Costa Blanca there is the most choice of carries and destinations from Alicante Airport and there is always a special deal and a sale.
Alicante Airport is the sixth busiest in Spain. The Alicante Airport New terminal opened on the 24th of March 2011. Predicted passenger capacity will increase from nine to twenty million passengers and the new terminal is spread over six floors with 15 telescopic air bridges and a new VIP Lounge. The new terminal is more than six the size of the old one and two terminals combined.
Shops at the New Terminal at Alicante Airport include twenty two new retail outlets including Cottett, Boss, Longchamp, Armani Jeans, Polo Jeans, Pepe Jeans, Tommy Hilfiger, Gloria Ortiz, Tuc Tuc, Desigual and Travel Mate, Swarovski, Superskunk, Las Lilas, Crystal Music, Aldeasa Sweet, Story Store, Sibarium, Libros Como Luces, Parafarmacia, El Corte Ingles and Relay Newsagents. There is even a Starbucks at the New Terminal. The old terminal at Alicante is officially now in disuse and passengers want to park their cars as close as possible to the new terminal unless they want to walk for miles.
A 2 million euro surcharge is being imposed for the airlines to use the air bridges which will result in many carriers in slashing their flights and will have a knock on effect for all concerned with many job losses as well. Ryan air is said to be slashing their flights from 600 to 200 flights a week and 31 routes will disappear from their time table altogether.

BMI Baby are pulling out of Cardiff and as yet there is no replacement from the Autumn. Ryanair have also announced that they will stop or reduce flights from Bristol to Alicante in the Autumn - they don't like being forced to use the air bridges at the new Alicante terminal and their associated cost, reckoned to be around £2M per year
